Studying a double major in biology and geography, I have done more then my fair share of tree coring but as a woodworker, nothing makes or breaks a wood marvel as much as the grain of the wood used.
What are tree rings?
They are produced by the plant’s cells over a one year period and usually leave a distinctively wider lighter white band followed by a narrower darker one to indicate different growing conditions over an annual basis. Many people think [...]

Forests are both a resource for recreation and profit and finally, the world is beginning to wakeup to the fact that one isn’t mutually exclusive to the other.
What is a sustainable forest?

Humans have done this for hundreds of thousands of years but in recent times, with trees being seen more for their economic value then their spiritual or ecological one… we seem [...]

A few articles back, I wrote about how plants evolved from bacteria over several hundreds of millions of years followed by an article of the results we see now… the World’s Biomes! As this is a woodworking site, how about we find out about the only biome type that is the source of our materials… forests!
Evolution of Forests
This might be difficult to imagine but for hundreds of millions of years ago, forests where just made up of plants. No animals, [...]

As part of my university studies in the field of biogeography, I learned a lot about the type, characteristics and distribution patterns of things around the world. From the random evolutionary processes that created the planet we all inhabit to the slow geological processes occurring around us on a daily basis.
What is a Biome?
Biomes are how we humans classify the distinctive environments that are found on our planet. They are defined by both the type of vegetation and organisms living [...]

The venerable Tangram has been a challenging puzzle ever sine it was invented by the Chinese during the Song Dynasty. The rules are simple, make shapes based on the seven puzzle pieces which do not overlap and must incorporate all the pieces. Sounds easy? Well, give it a try after building your very own using our new Tangram wood project pattern! You can find this project under our Educational category.

Second only to their distant cousins, the bacteria, plants are among the most successful type of life found on this planet. They colonized the sub-arctic millions of years before animals (including us) ever evolved and have survived several mass extinctions that killed off some of the most successful organisms to have ever inhabited this planet.
Prokaryotes: Where is all began
Made up of a small, microscopic cell, prokaryotes are the oldest and most successful organism to have ever inhabited our Earth. They [...]
