You know you’ve reached somewhere in life when Georgia Tech’s Invention Studio lists WoodMarvels.com as a source for BIG THINGS to be done with a laser… a Trotec Speedy300 Laser Cutter/Engraver no less! One of their 2012 sponsors is also Autodesk, that’s the software I use to build, test and animate everything you see on the site too! Georgia Tech is renown the world over for their expertise across several technical fields. I’m more than proud to be a role [...]

Some models are easier to translate from laser cutter to CNC than others. Here’ is a prime example for comparison… my Medieval Castle Bank vs Army Transport Truck (the 3D Assembly animations for both are at the bottom of this blog post). The Medieval Castle Bank was scaled-up to be CNC’able as well added dog bones but otherwise, nothing was changed on the model which I cut yesterday with my ShopBot Desktop. As you can see in the picture below, [...]
I got my first start in the laser world thanks to what I learned from Ponoko – before then, I was searching for a method to cut my designs and shipping them around the world WITHOUT me having to cut and ship them myself. At that time in my life, Ponoko ruled!!! I had maybe 20 designs, no orders and they were Mana from Heaven as far as I was concerned. Over the years, I’ve used Ponoko and was very [...]
When I make my videos for the CNC projects here on WoodMarvels.com, I have two main work rooms – the first is the garage where I do all the cutting and assembly. The second is where I do the introductions… I first did everything in the garage but the weather was too cold and the lighting was more difficult to deal with. I’m not a natural in front of the camera so this is a skill I’m still very much [...]
This Platform Crane B started-off as a simple dowel based project many years ago when I first started WoodMarvels.com. Then was redesigned to be laser cut from one board… and now… it’s available in a larger size to be CNC’ed from five sheets of 6mm plywood! The completed 41 piece model has dimensions of L: 47cm, W: 32cm, H: 25cm and is actually pretty easy to assemble as you can see from the animation below. Platform Crane B CNC: Proof [...]
David Newman’s recently launched laser cut Christmas Tree is now available to be CNC’ed! The completed model has only 6 pieces with the final dimensions of L: 34cm, W: 34cm, H: 49cm cut across four 500mm x 400mm sheet of 6mm thick plywood. You can find this under WoodMarvels.com / Collaborations / ShopBot Tools (CNC). About a month back I got an inquiry, a customer in Greece needed a physical kit cut and shipped to them ASAP for their kid’s school project. I sprung into action! I sent the request to my Commercial License Holder in France (yep, sold one there a while back – thanks Benjamin!) and his company cut and shipped it… within 3 days, the customer had in their hands! Dear Jon, Well, the “construction” of the bridge finished from the very [...]
As usual, astonished by how much I got done over the course of a month… in the video department, WoodMarvels.com hit a new record, over 184 THOUSAND views over the course of just one month! Amazing… at this rate, I should hit 2 million total views in March. What’s even cooler is this trend is increasing! February 2012 Happenings! On the CNC front, many new models were released including a Rhino, Elephant, Santa & Reindeer, Fish Pad, On the laser [...]
WoodMarvels.com was written up a few months back in the Japanese EtherPod Blog… you can see the link at http://etherpod.org/blog/?p=4257 They like the Physic’s Trophy and would love to see it in acrylic… I agree so maybe that’s something I’ll get to later and stick some fiber optics in it to boot! Every once in a while I make a search for WoodMarvels.com and usually come-out from a quick minute search with something interesting… this time was no exception!
Edgar has been busy building up a collection of his awesome Elastic Band Gun so scroll down and enjoy the videos!
