Copyrights like patents are just a license to sue if you don&#039;t like what someone else has done.  It allows the holder of the patent or copyright to license their IP(Intellectual Property) in a way that suits them for a period of time.  Normally if someone wants to make something using the ideas they are free to, the &#039;maker&#039; is just prohibited from selling the items.

Over time our patent/copyright law has become more cumbersome while trying to protect rights, but hopefully keeping the IP from getting &#039;lost&#039; along the way.

Even in those laws there are special cases like the &quot;Disney Protection&quot; put into US law just in time to protect Mickey Mouse from becoming public domain in some number of years after Walt Disney&#039;s death.  There are other examples of such protectionist laws occurring (but few so open and blatant).  I am not saying they are good or bad, they are what they are, and are subject to society changing them at a whim.
