Over time our patent/copyright law has become more cumbersome while trying to protect rights, but hopefully keeping the IP from getting 'lost' along the way. Even in those laws there are special cases like the "Disney Protection" put into US law just in time to protect Mickey Mouse from becoming public domain in some number of years after Walt Disney's death. There are other examples of such protectionist laws occurring (but few so open and blatant).
