  • Hold Downs... in this case, a million screws that don't last very long!

I got my amazing ShopBot Desktop from ShopBot Tools six months ago and since then, have put the machine through its paces. Here is a review of how things have gone so far. 30+ models tested and (almost) released! Over the past 6 months, I’ve cut over 30 models and almost released an equal amount here on WoodMarvels.com  – considering I’ve never touched a CNC machine beforehand nor knew how to film with a camera (skill I’m still learning through [...]

  • ShopBot Tools

I visited ShopBot Tools and got a ShopBot Desktop almost 6 months ago and since then, have cut more than 30 models with it (each one 2-3x for prototyping)… it’s a great machine and now I’m on their homepage (below) and here is a direct link to the page the testimonial links to… I guess now you know what I look like minus the beard and long hair!

  • Laser cut Sydney Harbor Bridge school project - cut in France - assembled in Greece!

About a month back I got an inquiry, a customer in Greece needed a physical kit cut and shipped to them ASAP for their kid’s school project. I sprung into action! I sent the request to my Commercial License Holder in France (yep, sold one there a while back – thanks Benjamin!) and his company cut and shipped it… within 3 days, the customer had in their hands! Dear Jon, Well, the “construction” of the bridge finished from the very [...]

  • Pterodactyl CNC'ed with my ShopBot Desktop from ShopBot Tools Inc.

I’ve now completed the 3D animation and live filming using a new format for the newest CNC project here on WoodMarvels.com… a Pterodactyl CNC! Once completed, this 14 piece model has the dimensions of L: 40cm, W: 25cm, H: 11cm @ 6mm. It’s all cut on one 500mm x 400mm sheet of plywood. This is the last of my original laser dinosaur series I made and you can fine it in DXF/EPS/AI/PartWorks and PDF file formats at WoodMarvels.com under Collaborations [...]

  • Fish Pad CNC Project

The final batch of my initial CNC projects which I did as soon as I got my ShopBot Desktop included this Fish Pad CNC, it was actually the very first thing I cut while here as it required no assembly! You can buy these plans and the other 17 at WoodMarvels.com under Adobe Illustrator, EPS, DXF and PartWorks file formats under Collaboration / ShopBot Tools (CNC). ShopBot’ing a Fish Pad: Proof of Concept

  • Laser Cut Noah's Ark with animals

David Newman has a new wood marvel online, it’s an ark (at two different sizes) plus 27 animal silhouettes! The Arks come at a very decent size as follows Large ark dimensions @ 6mm L: 21cm, W: 8cm, H: 13cm. Small ark dimensions @ 6mm L: 16cm, W: 8cm, H: 13cm. While the animal silhouettes can be easily scaled to fit into either ark or bigger to suit your needs. You can find David’s Ark + 27 Animal Silhouettes files [...]

  • Santa's Sled and Reindeer CNC project... minus the Santa

Yep, Santa and his Reindeer have made another trip to WoodMarvels.com, this time in the form of a CNC project! You can find this new CNC project under Collaborations / AskJerry in PDF, DXF, AI and PartWorks file formats. This was a fun project to update from Jerry’s design to be CNC’able as all the smooth curves really looked cool being cut out by the ShopBot Desktop… it’s amazing seeing a 130 pound machine move so gracefully as it’s cutting [...]

  • 2012-feb-10

You may not have known much about Evright, an Australian-based retailer featuring trophies, plaques and medallions but in a few months, that will change quite dramatically – they cut and assembled my Electronic’s Trophy not out of wood, but black acrylic… looks amazing! Here’s a picture! Below you can see the animations which I produced showing the how the model would have looked like in wood and all the various pieces required to put it together. I really am anxious [...]

  • Elephant CNC - cut with my ShopBot Desktop

I’ve always enjoyed the majestic grace of elephants, they seem to know who they are and don’t seem to care what other animals do around them. They are very proud and strong, and now you can get your very own CNC equivalent! You can find this now at WoodMarvels.com in PartWorks/DXF and PDF file formats right now. It’s made-up of 24 pieces with dimensions @ 6mm of L: 22cm, W: 12cm, H: 16.5cm cut on one 500mm x 400mm sheet [...]

  • DSC_0025b

Dirk designed this wonderful tray for laser and it was on the top of my list to try to convert to CNC… and now you can buy it as well at WoodMarvels.com under Collaborations / Dirk (or ShopBot Tools) for your very own workshop. This CNC project is 14 pieces in total and if you are using 6mm thick material,19cm square with a height of 6cm. The joints are pretty tight so you probably don’t even need glue either if [...]

Posted by Jon On April - 5 - 2012 Comments Off

Had a few very important meetings and if everything works out… some big announcements coming soon! In the meantime, this month I didn’t get to 2M video views due to a Google Update (will happen though in a week or two) which seems to have penalized long-tail web traffic but otherwise… things kept on humming along! March 2012 Happenings! Released a few of new CNC projects including a Pterodactyl, Christmas Tree and Platform Crane B Edgar released more videos of [...]

i3DS now on Pinterest.com

Posted by Jon On March - 26 - 2012 Comments Off

Joining yet another fad… let’s see how this one goes over linkedin, facebook, twitter and a bunch of other ones. http://pinterest.com/i3ds/ Good thing about this system (like the others) is that it’s mostly automated… do it once, and it goes all over the place automatically. Why i3DS? Well, that’s the parent company of WoodMarvels.com, 3DMarvels.com and a host of other sites & experiments I have.

You know you’ve reached somewhere in life when Georgia Tech’s Invention Studio lists WoodMarvels.com as a source for BIG THINGS to be done with a laser… a Trotec Speedy300 Laser Cutter/Engraver no less! One of their 2012 sponsors is also Autodesk, that’s the software I use to build, test and animate everything you see on the site too! Georgia Tech is renown the world over for their expertise across several technical fields. I’m more than proud to be a role [...]

CNC Models: R&D efforts and removing limiting factors

CNC Army Transport Truck with glue drying and lots of clamps!

Some models are easier to translate from laser cutter to CNC than others. Here’ is a prime example for comparison… my Medieval Castle Bank vs Army Transport Truck (the 3D Assembly animations for both are at the bottom of this blog post). The Medieval Castle Bank was scaled-up to be CNC’able as well added dog bones but otherwise, nothing was changed on the model which I cut yesterday with my ShopBot Desktop. As you can see in the picture below, [...]

WoodMarvels.com is no longer a PRIME Ponoko member

Posted by Jon On March - 16 - 2012 Comments Off

I got my first start in the laser world thanks to what I learned from Ponoko – before then, I was searching for a method to cut my designs and shipping them around the world WITHOUT me having to cut and ship them myself. At that time in my life, Ponoko ruled!!! I had maybe 20 designs, no orders and they were Mana from Heaven as far as I was concerned. Over the years, I’ve used Ponoko and was very [...]

WoodMarvels.com Video Work Areas

When I make my videos for the CNC projects here on WoodMarvels.com, I have two main work rooms – the first is the garage where I do all the cutting and assembly. The second is where I do the introductions… I first did everything in the garage but the weather was too cold and the lighting was more difficult to deal with. I’m not a natural in front of the camera so this is a skill I’m still very much [...]

Posted by Jon On March - 11 - 2012 Comments Off

This Platform Crane B started-off as a simple dowel based project many years ago when I first started WoodMarvels.com. Then was redesigned to be laser cut from one board… and now… it’s available in a larger size to be CNC’ed from five sheets of 6mm plywood! The completed 41 piece model has dimensions of L: 47cm, W: 32cm, H: 25cm and is actually pretty easy to assemble as you can see from the animation below. Platform Crane B CNC: Proof [...]
